A mixed fraction (or mixed number) combines a whole number and a proper fraction, like 2¾. It represents a value between two whole numbers - in this case, between 2 and 3.
Convert each mixed fraction to an improper fraction, find a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify and convert back to a mixed number if needed. For example: 1½ + 2¾ = 3/2 + 11/4 = 6/4 + 11/4 = 17/4 = 4¼.
